is hormone replacement therapy really necessary after menopause for most women?

I had a full hysterectomy four 1/2 years ago at age of 49. I decided against beginning hormone replacement therapy. Although I did experience hot flashes, mood swings and reduced libido for several years, I made a conscientious decision to combat these naturally. I am happy to report that I have succeeded beyond my hopes in every respect!

Good for you. No, it’s not necessary. Hormone treatment helps many women, but if you can put up with the symptoms naturally, there’s no reason for hormone treatment. The hormones are just meant to help women adjust to the hormonal changes that they’re going through. They ease the transition. But women made it through menopause just fine before therapies were developed.
