I’ve had a complete hysterectomy in ’94 and have taken Estradiol – 1 mg., 1 tab. daily since (& now over 65 yrs of age). Have recently been concerned of long term side effects such as breast cancer, etc., but have also heard it can prevent heart attacks & osteoporosis. Which has the greater risk?
After complete hysterectomy nearly all the estrogen and the progesterone supply to the woman’s body is cut abruptly and as a result of this osteoporosis (besides ,of course, negative changes in sexual behaviour and desire) become the main complaint and it really becomes so dangerous afterwards that you should fall or twist your ankle or have an accident …and a hysterectomic woman finds no answer to her question better than hormone replacement therapy to live a normal life again.
But talking about breast cancer as a hazard of HRT one should never lie to a patient ..and so ,,the answer is “yes..it is very probable especially for women on long term HRT”.
Here is what you must do :
1- Have your CA125 and your blood calcium level checked regularly every six-twelve months if you put it in your mind to go on HRT….
About your question “Which has the greater risk?” the answer is : both osteoporosis and breast cancer are undesirable and extremely dangerous ..and the final decision which way to go remains yours
