Ethical Decsions : What should you do; ethically ?
Ethical Decsions : What should you do; ethically ?
Example: If you work for company that manufactures, markets,& distributes various products, including nutritional supplements to health food & nutrition stores. One of the company’s best -selling product is an herbal supplement called Mortila. The company advertise that Rosalife “Achieves all the gains of estrogen hormone replacement therapy without any of the side effects.” One day a research assistant stops by your office with some troubling information. She tells you that while researching another product, she came across a recent study that suggests that Mortila does not offer the benefits the company claims it does. You show this study to your supervisor, who says,”We’re not responsible for validating non-FDA controlled products & nobody’s hurt anyway.” Indeed you know that this is not the case. What is your ethical responsibility??
Pls answer this question as long as possible, i shall provide BA.
Dear Samantha,
My concept ( or should I say “understanding” ) of Ethics is that it pertains to whatever is Right. No compromise.
But applying “Ethics” into our everyday life and work can require a little more intelligence that just standing on the roof top and “baring it all”.
In such a scenario as described above, our ethical responsibility remains to uphold the truth and what is “correct”.
I would break these “options” into two categories :
Category 1 : If the product did not cause “harm” to anybody :
As a “savy” employee, you should try to find a way to make your supervisor ( or somebody above ) rectify this wrong advertisment.
A direct “stop-press” about the company giving wrong information might not be the only solution.
How about a less destructive solution like changing the adverts to promote some other (this time true) benefits while (in smaller characters) disclosing that with these newly discovered (improved !) benefits, the previously advertised benefits are not warranted.
Another option is to “create” a new range ( improved formula ) again where some other (this time true) benefits while (in smaller characters) disclosing that with these newly discovered (improved !) benefits, the previously advertised benefits are not warranted.
If nobody listens to you, then find a way ( maybe through a friend in the press, if you dont want to loose your job ) to let the truth get exposed.
Category 2 : If “harm” has been done to the people buying and using this product :
Again try to find a way to make your supervisor ( or somebody above ) rectify and make good the damage done + stop further damage.
Options less destructive to your employer would be favored.
But still action must be taken.
If nobody listens, the only ethical option is to find a way ( maybe through a friend in the press, if you dont want to loose your job ) to let the truth get exposed.
What I would not consider “ethical” would be :
(a) Just stand there and do nothing.
(b) Walk away and let them do the wrong thing.
Because, in both cases you will be contributing to doing the wrong thing too.
