estrogen replacement
Estrogen levels after cancer treatment?

I had cancer four years ago. Since I am only in my early thirties, my doctor put me on the pill (Alesse) because without it, I was not producing enough estrogen naturally, due to side effects of chemo on the reproductive system. I’ve been on it for almost two years now, but lately I find it is giving me migraines. I am wondering if any cancer survivors have had this issue – the not producing estrogen issue – dealt with by an alternative to the pill. I was told that if I didn’t produce enough estrogen I’d be at increased risk for osteoporosis at a young age, and other problems associated with not having enough estrogen. Estrogen replacement is also risky, so my doctor didn’t want to put me on that.

Please let me know what any of you have discovered. I want to go off the pill entirely but am worried about the risks of not enough estrogen – which makes my periods all wonky. Obviously I’ll talk to my doctor about this first, but any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Khael

You might benefit from Raloxifene (Evista), a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator. It protects your bones like estrogen, while preventing estrogen’s effects on your breast and uterine tissue. It protects against breast cancer to a certain degree, but is not helpful for your fertility at all. Not alll SERMS would be helpful in your case, as Tamoxifen does not help the bones.
