I am 24 years old.
I was at my doctors’ office the other day and I was reading through some of the promotional material from the pharmaceutical companies about a drug called “Premarin”. On the back, the whole entire back page as a matter of fact, was warning about the use of oestrogen only containing drugs. It said that they can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, breast cancer, and dementia.
Now, I know that birth control pills are given in much smaller doses of these hormones than in the hormone replacement therapy doses, but still, that’s scary stuff. I lost two grandparents to Alzheimer’s and my mother to breast cancer. I think I am going to ask my doctor about non-hormonal contraceptives and if there aren’t any that are suitable for me I might just stay celibate for awhile.
Am I overreacting? Not understanding the data correctly?
No you are correct to be worried. Stats show that long term estrogen excess has a great affect on breast cancer rates. (5 of my family members so far) SO taking the pill for years and not being pregnant increases risk @ 60%. The good news is breast feeding for 15 years repeals this sentence. Not possible you say! No but regular nipple stimulation simulates it and the prolactin release counter acts the estrogen effects. It also suppresses period extremes and produces oxytocin, the love hormone, without fear of pregnancy. Some women induce lactation for the many health benefits and the daily love dose with their partner. Its safe, user friendly and free!
