Using Bioidentical Hormones Against HSDD

HSDD is hypoactive sexual desire disorder. According a recent study published in Arch Intern Med (2008 Jul 14;168(13):1441-9) HSDD rates are high. This disorder is characterized by a noticeable lack in sexual desire. Expert diagnosis is required in order to obtain adequate treatment.

In order for a lack of sexual desire to indicate HSDD the lack must be not only noticeable, but problematic. Problematic would indicate that it is causing distress in the relationship to the individual experiencing the HSDD or the sexual partner. Care needs to be taken when diagnosing HSDD due to the general nature of the symptoms and the fact that they can indicate a number of other physical/mental conditions.

Identifying the cause of HSDD can be difficult (sometimes impossible). The cause can vary greatly. Situations are all so different. It also depends upon the type of HSDD presenting. Different types of HSDD come with different typical symptoms. It can sometimes be caused by low testosterone or high prolactine or any of a number of psychiatric disorders or hormonal imbalances to name a few. In some cases the cause is never identified.

Women can find it difficult to determine if they are experiencing a normal lull in sexual desire or if they are experiencing signs of HSDD. Lack of sex drive can be normal for some women. Women having difficulty determining if they are experiencing normal lulls or HSDD should consider how long the lull has lasted. If it has been long enough to create a problem in the relationship then HSDD could be present.

The Arch Intern Med study indicated that the highest rates of HSDD were found among menopausal women. The high risk of HSDD was noticed particularly amongst surgically menopausal women.

A second study published on the topic (Menopause 2006 Jan-Feb;13(1):46-56) concluded that age didn’t seem to be a big factor. The condition can be found in women of all ages as well as women of all reproductive stages. This study indicated that women at the highest risk for HSDD were those that were both young and surgically menopausal.

There is currently no pharmaceutical treatment for HSDD. Because of this many women with HSDD feel there is no recourse. They are wrong. There is an option for those wishing to decrease or eliminate their HSDD symptoms: bioidentical hormones treatment. HSDD requires an expert diagnosis. It’s especially important because of the general nature of the symptoms. They can be indicative of another medical issue altogether; physical or mental or situational. Thorough hormone testing of all a woman’s hormone levels offers the best basis for treatment.

Risk factors for HSDD have been going up so it is important that individuals are aware of the condition so they can seek proper diagnosis and treatment. Accessing bioidentical hormones therapy is a positive move for most women with HSDD or suspicions of HSDD. Drastic relief can be found through proper diagnosis and treatment.
