ARE BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES EXPENSIVE?

I watch the Oprah show recently and heard all of the great raves about Bioidentical Hormones. However, no one has mention anything regarding the cost of the office visits to a doctor who specializes in prescribing the hormones. Also, no one has mentioned if the hormones are expensive and if they are covered under most health insurances. With the state of the economy, I am trying to cut costs where ever I can.

It’s usually more expensive to use bio-identical hormones than synthetic hormones. Many insurance companies do not cover them at all and the ones that do, usually do not pay much of the costs. You will still have to see your gynecologist for tests and go to a pharmacist at a compounding pharmacy. Many cities do not have a compounding pharmacy. Some women believe that bio-identical hormones are “safer” than synthetic hormones. The truth is that it is not known if they are because they are not classified as drugs and tested by the Food and Drug Administration.

Many pharmacies offer $4 generic prescriptions and there are several synthetic hormones on their list. My HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is one of those on Wal-Mart’s $4 list, and with my insurance, I pay $6 for a 3-month supply.
